NLP was a much harder problem when we were trying a grammar approach. Now that there is the whole internet to act as a database, not to mention Cyc, and statistical methods are being tried, I am more optimistic that we'll have simultaneous natural language translation sooner rather than later.
Google labs has a video about some good results by Google on statistical NLP (sorry no time today to look up the link), and I'm finding Google's translate.google.com better than Yahoo's, which was always my rough-draft of choice before Google's recent improvements. Try it.
